Summer Yet to Come

Oil paint on canvas

This painting reflects the feeling of anticipation that permeates Dartmoor, specifically near Cadover Bridge. In this piece, I’ve aimed to capture that moment between seasons when summer is still just a promise on the horizon. Using a palette knife, I focused on creating texture and energy—there’s a rawness to the brushstrokes that brings the landscape to life. The palette knife allowed me to layer the paint in a way that feels more immediate, with bold, sweeping strokes that mirror the wild, untamed spirit of the Devon moorland. Through the palette knife, I’ve tried to bring the land’s natural rhythm and energy to the surface. The painting feels alive, like the moors themselves are poised for change, inviting the viewer to feel the quiet tension before summer’s full arrival.
